The Office of the Chief Coroner of Saskatchewan is responsible for the investigation of all sudden, unexpected and unnatural deaths as described in Section 7 of The Coroners Act, 1999.  We are an independent agency operating under the direction of the Chief Coroner and reporting administratively to the Ministry of Justice.

There are approximately 150 lay coroners in Saskatchewan, plus the Chief Coroner.  In Saskatchewan, coroners are not necessarily doctors.

We are committed to conducting a thorough and independent examination of the circumstances surrounding sudden, unexpected and unnatural deaths in order to improve the health, safety and quality of life of the Province of Saskatchewan.

The Coroner is assisted by the police.  In situations where foul play is suspected or apparent, the police will direct a criminal investigation and they will be assisted by the Coroner.

Information on obtaining a copy of an autopsy report, report of Coroner, physician statements and death certificates is available in this section.

In this section, information on who is the coronor, autopsy information and other answers to questions about the coroners' office investigations.

When the Office of the Chief Coroner recruits lay Coroners around the province, an advertisement is placed in the local newspapers asking for qualified applicants to apply to serve as Coroners.
