The Provincial Mediation Board Act makes mediation services available to debtors and creditors. It provides a neutral third party to facilitate negotiation of the settlement or compromise of debt between parties.

The Act establishes the Provincial Mediation Board whose members are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. A debtor must contact the Board for assistance. The Board then inquires into the claims made against the debtor and his or her ability to pay the debt, and attempts to bring about an agreement for the payment of the debt.

The Act also authorizes the Board to mediate between a municipality and an owner of land who is in property tax arrears. The Board tries to create a reasonable repayment plan so the municipality collects its taxes and the property owner retains his or her land.
