The Professional Corporations Act

Any professional association that is governed by an Act may apply to the Minister of Justice to be designated under The Professional Corporations Act.

When an association is designated under the Act, it will:

• administer the application of the Act to its members;
• pass bylaws that govern the qualifications and procedures for registration of the professional corporations;
• regulate the names by which professional corporations may be known; and
• regulate advertising by professional corporations.

A professional corporation may engage in the practice of a profession when it has obtained a permit from its professional association.

This Act applies only to professions designated in the regulations.

The following professions have been designated: 

• chartered accountants; 
• certified general accountants; 
• certified management consultants; 
• chiropractors; 
• dentists; 
• lawyers; 
• management accountants;
• optometrists; 
• physical therapists;
• podiatrists; 
• psychologists;
• real estate agents registrered under The Real Estate Act; and
• veterinarians.
