The Children's Law Act, 1997 governs custody, access and guardianship of children. It includes rules for determining child status, parentage and related issues.

As a general rule, the Act establishes the parents as joint custodians of their child with equal rights, powers and duties. This is subject to exceptions mentioned in the Act or an agreement or court order to the contrary.

The Act includes remedies for enforcing custody and access orders and rules respecting the role of the guardians and trustees of the property of a child.
